Maintenance
Placement
- Position the tree fern upright outdoors; avoid placing it in a greenhouse.
- Plant it in the ground or in a pot with John Innes 2 or a similar potting mix.
- Opt for a shady location, but if possible, provide less shade and more water.
Cherry laurel Maintenance
- Do not cut back the fronds from previous years.
- Instead, pull them out from the crown, especially in February or March, depending on the season.
- Preserve the aperture of the crown by not cutting back fronds. This ensures healthy future growth and the emergence of new fronds
Winter Protection
- In winter, especially during prolonged cold spells, use fleece to insulate the crown by forming a ball shape.
Planting Depth
- Plant 1/5 to 1/4 of the tree fern either in the ground or in a pot.
Watering
- Water at least 1 gallon (approximately 5 liters) per foot per day. For example, a 3-foot tree fern requires 15 liters (3 gallons) of water daily.
- Ensure that most of the water is directed into the crown of the tree fern
Temperature Tolerance
- The tree fern can withstand temperatures down to minus 5 degrees Celsius comfortably.
- In colder conditions, below minus 5 degrees Celsius, use fleece to create a ball shape and wedge it into the crown for insulation.
- Avoid using straw or bubble wrap for insulation.
